New York has passed a nation-leading law to move our economy off the fossil fuels that are polluting the environment and causing dangerous warming of the earth. We can feel changes in the weather all around, from extreme heat to drought to violent storms. These stresses are the worst for people without the resources to protect themselves. But exciting developments are taking place. The state law calls for investing 35 - 40% of clean energy funding into “disadvantaged” communities such as Newburgh. There is funding - and more on the way - for cleaner school buses, electric cars and chargers, electric bikes, solar panels, electric heat pumps that cool as well as heating, and more. There is also federal and state funding to make our neighborhoods more resilient in the face of extreme weather. How can the City of Newburgh and its residents take advantage of these opportunities, not only to deal with climate change, but also to reverse past inequities and build a prosperous green economy?
